THE500 2025 – A Weekend That Reminded Us Why We Do This

18 & 19 October 2025 will stand out for me as one of the most meaningful editions of THE500 since we first launched this event more than a decade ago. Not because everything went smoothly (it never does), or because we reached our ambitious fundraising goal (we didn’t this time)… but because of the unmistakable spirit that carried us through those 24 hours. (and the 33 hours we were all awake in total!)

This year felt different. It felt personal.

We hosted THE500 at De Hoop Primary School in Somerset West,my old school, where I spent the years from 1981 to 1986. Standing there again, four decades later, surrounded by people united by purpose, was truly special. De Hoop welcomed us with open arms, and I’m deeply grateful to Cobus van Coller and his team for partnering with us so generously.

Energy, Passion and Grit – Hour After Hour

Right at 10:00 on Saturday morning, the three components of THE500 kicked off:

500 km Cycling Challenge

Fourteen solo cyclists and one determined “Team of Two” pushed themselves through one of the toughest personal challenges imaginable: riding 500 km in 24 hours. Nine individuals and the two-person team made it all the way. They were joined throughout the day and night by many others completing one or more 50 km laps, adding their energy to the cause.

24-hour Spinning Arena

Inside De Hoop’s activity centre, 30 spinning bikes kept turning for 24 continuous 45-minute sessions. The costumes, music, team chants, and sheer enthusiasm of teams like the Kritzinger family, Diverso, Somerset College, Cirque du Sore Legs, and Century 21 brought a contagious energy that lit up the hall.

Alan Barnes and Tanya Fourie completed all 24 sessions back-to-back, an extraordinary milestone of endurance and character.

The Zwift Experience Comes Alive

For the first time, THE500 hosted a dedicated Zwift setup at the event – 12 riders from Cycle Nation joined more than 1,200 international Zwifters online. Screens, smart trainers, fans and cheers created a powerful atmosphere.

One of the highlights for me was meeting Georgina Alsop, who flew all the way from the UK simply to be part of THE500. Her joy and enthusiasm captured the spirit of what makes this event so unique.

What Participants Had to Say

What keeps us going every year isn’t just the kilometres or the numbers – it’s the impact, the connection, and the words of those who join us. These were some of the messages that warmed our hearts:

“One of the best organized events I have attended yet. Friendly and helpful staff all the way through… all driven by a passion to serve.” — Marcel

“Amazing care given to cyclists! Vibe is kept going for 24 hours!” — Wouter

“First time spinning. I am 63 years old and I loved it! Next time I will do more rounds.” — Jacqueline

“Combining sport and fundraising is the best combination. Well organised, fun, and amazing vibes.” — Carla

“What an absolutely incredible 24-hour indoor Zwift cycling challenge… an unforgettable ride.” — Antonio

These reflections are a reminder of what makes THE500 special: it brings out the best in people.

The True Reason Behind It All

THE500 has always had one clear purpose: to raise funds for children in need.

This year, although we fell short of our R750,000 target, we still raised approx. R480,000 after expenses – money that will have a direct and meaningful impact in the lives of children supported through Distance For Difference.

Over the seven editions since 2013, THE500 has now raised more than R4 million. That is something every participant, volunteer, sponsor, and supporter can celebrate.

A Moment to Remember

One of the standout moments this year was on Sunday morning when professional cyclist Kim Le Court-Pienaar joined us for a final lap. Fresh from making history as the first African woman to win a stage and wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France Femmes, she brought inspiration and delight to everyone on the road.

Her words afterward captured the essence of the event:

“Felt truly inspired being surrounded by such strong and passionate humans… a beautiful reminder of how powerful sport can be when it’s driven by purpose and heart.”

Thank You – To Every Single One of You

Events like this don’t happen without an army of people who care.

A special word of thanks to:

  • Noel Rowe and Lourensford Wine Estate for opening the estate roads for our night route.
  • Every sponsor, supporter, marshal, medic, volunteer, spanner-in-hand mechanic, hydration helper, lap counter, and behind-the-scenes organiser who made the 24 hours run safely and smoothly.
  • Every cyclist, spinner, and Zwifter who showed up with grit, heart, and purpose.
